The food here is pretty good, and the portions are HUGE! I've always had good service. The selection is large and can be overwhelming if you don't know what you like.

I am not a big sushi fan, but my husband is. There was a good selection for me, and my husband thought that there were plenty of sushi choices for him. Our food was good, but not wonderful. There was an adequate beer and wine menu as well as several sake choices. The ambiance was quite lovely, although some of the furniture was showing its age. I didn't think to ask about a dessert menu. The service was good.

Loved the atmosphere here and a huge thumbs up for the service! Food was hot and served promptly..also loved the presentation. I had the Bruce Lee roll and the spicy basil chicken as well as the miso soup. My husband had the sweet and sour soup as well as the garlic pepper beef..we loved everything! My only complaint was that the tuna in the Bruce Lee roll could have tasted a little fresher.. Definetly plan on coming back though..lots of yummy food for a really good price!

Was in town for work and did a solo trip to this place. Ate at the sushi bar and the staff was friendly and helpful. The Jasmine hot tea hit the spot on the cold night. I order the Surf n Turf roll and an Eel roll. Both were great and reasonably priced. The place was clean, cool atmosphere, and a place I will visit again on my next trip. It is located near an outdoor shopping area, and a movie theater, so there are things to do after you eat.

My lovely wife, oldest step-daughter and I recently went to Coeur D'Alene to celebrate Father's Day and get out of the hustle and bustle of Walla Walla! We like staying at the Hampton Suites which used to be a bit out of the way near the Spokane River. Now it seems to be in the center of a thriving area with lots of new stores and restaurants with upscale condos and lodging. We'd heard good things about Ugly Fish Asian Bistro from Yelp so we tried it. It's larger than it looks and was pretty busy for Father's Day weekend but we were seated fairly quickly. One thing we noticed is it was packed with locals who waved at each other while exchanging pleasantries. That's a good thing! We ordered some sake, edamame, sushi and bento. I ordered hot sake, which is nontraditional for summer, but it came at a perfect body temperature. I like hot sake to be as warm as a lover's kiss - 98.6F. The edamame was good and I'm glad we got it since the waitress warned us that things were a bit slow in the kitchen. Slow means you might start thinking that sake could be part of the veggie group! When our sushi and bento arrived, though, it was very good with well-prepared rice, fresh fish and veggies in an attractive setting. The bento included tempura shrimp and veggies which were done just right. One curious thing about tempura...it is not Japanese abut was actually brought over from Portugal to Japan. No one is sure how it got the name tempura but it's not Japanese. Overall an excellent dining experience with well prepared food at reasonable prices in a place popular with locals.

This fine restaurant has been a staple for "Date Night" over the years. Very upscale decor and high quality food at a fair price. Lighting and colors are just right. It also has the added benefit of being across from the park to go to after a good meal and stretch your legs on a pleasant walk.

I visited Coeur D'Alene for a few days and to my delight, I found a sushi joint relatively close to the hotel I was staying at. I read there reviews here on Yelp and had high hopes. High hopes that were pretty much crushed. To start, Ugly Fish opens at 11:30am, not 11am according to Yelp. The nice part of Ugly Fish is I was able to order my take-out online. No one to screw up my order besides me. I ordered a Volcano Roll, Bruce Lee Roll and a Spicy Tuna Roll. I didn't pay online because the whole premise and website seemed just a little sketchy and I'd rather pay in person. About 20 minutes later, I arrived at Ugly Fish. You'd expect a fresh fish place to smell like fresh fish. I found the smell a bit too fishy and unpleasant. There were two women sitting at the sushi bar and a family of 4 sitting at one table. That was all. There was quite a bit more food under the tables than I care to see in a restaurant. The sushi itself was just alright. I try to eat sushi everywhere I travel because variety is the spice of life right? The rolls were about 2 steps above Fred Meyer sushi. If the Ugly Fish sushi used old rice like Fred Meyer does, it would have been equivalent to Fred Meyer. I won't visit Ugly Fish anytime soon while in the Coeur D'Alene area. On Yelp some people swear by this place but it's not for me. Thanks but no thanks.

THE BEST SUSHI IN THE AREA! I come from San Francisco, and I know good Japanese. The Coeur d Alene roll is unusual but so good. I love the sautéed noodles as a side, as well as the atmosphere of the restaurant.

Surprised this place doesn't have better reviews; we loved it! Granted we hadn't tried any of the rolls (we're purists and tend to go for sashimi), but here's a quick list of all the things that were awesome: -- Ambiance: Nice and comfy, upscale/clean without being stuffy. We sat in one of the oversized booths and were so comfortable... really felt like we had our own personal space! -- Service: Pleasant, quick but not too quick... great staff, everyone super friendly with a warm smile on their face. -- FOOD: The fish is super fresh and delicious. One of the best sashimi platters we've had (saying a lot considering the fact that we've had it all over the country at this point). -- Presentation: Beautifully plated, very appetizing. -- Price: We found this place to be considerably cheaper than expected for the quality/atmosphere/service experienced. Love it here, highly recommended!

This place is incredibly inefficient and the service is very slow. The staffing level can't keep up with the demands. Most waiters are not even friendly. My recommendation is don't even bother to go. What a terrible business.

Went in for lunch on a Tues. They took 35 mins to get me a drink and take my order. There were maybe 6 people in the place and several wait staff. The food was delicious but when it takes 1.5 hours to get the sushi lunch special I am not impressed

This is probably the best sushi in town at the moment, although you will pay more than for a comparable meal at Bonsai Bistro or Syringa, the two other places I go for sushi when I want to stay in town. The sushi itself is always fresh and delicious, beautifully made, and extremely satisfying. If it wasn't for the cost, I would eat here at least once a week!

I honestly really liked the Ugly Fish. The food was great, it was served fast, and the servers were great. I got the Butterfly and Coeur d' Alene sushi rolls and I highly recommend them. Just a warning about the imitation crab. If you don't want imitation crab then you can switch it out for Dungeness crab but make sure you're asked because they don't ask which you would prefer. My biggest complaint is the bathroom. It seriously looked like a gas station bathroom. I was surprised judging how fantastic everything was inside the restaurant. Overall, it had some great food that is worth going to again.

Had a chance to eat here twice in two weeks. On the run the first time for lunch but it was just great. Went again tonight for a full meal and even centerpiece. Over the top taste, presentation and service. We ate on the patio with our little, well behaved, dogs. They were made to feel as welcome as we were. This place is easy to find, plenty of parking and perched on a vista for outside diners that really shows off this recently developed property.

Every time I've ever gone, it's just ok. The atmosphere is nice. The service is usually good. The food is just ok. They are too cheap to reprint menus, but instead to the Chinese dive restaurant thing and tape over the old price and hand write over the top. I feel their prices are too high. And for sushi-way better in town. Syringa!

Ugly Fish is a glorified Panda Express with additional choice of sushi, beer and wine. I do not mean this as a criticism, Panda Express is not too bad in its category. It is hard for me to say negative things about a place where the staff is so friendly and eager to hypnotize you into the false feeling that you are eating your General Tso's chicken at an illustrious place of fine dining. Therefore, first the good news. The chairs are comfortable. Some of the light fixtures are imaginative. The place must be super germ-free, as it reeked of Clorox on the day of our visit. Our server was gracious and helpful when we asked to get us a new table at a less-sanitized and chloride-stench-free part of the establishment. The menu is a collection of disparate items from the offerings of typical Chinese, Japanese, Thai and other Asian restaurants. Well, this does not make the *cuisine* "fusion" as advertised, it only makes the *menu* "fusion", at most. The dumplings, the beef stew and the tangerine beef that we tried were decent run off the mill Chinese fares you would get it from any self-respecting neighborhood Oriental eatery. Ugly Fish makes money from serving the youngish crowd that frequents the nearby movie complex. This might be a valid business model and an honest way to keep afloat. The problem is that the place does not seem to aspire for more. If Panda Express does not cut it for you and you want to eat your pre- or post-movie stir fry sitting on crimson plush chairs sipping lukewarm beer then Ugly Fish is the place you want to be.

I don't know why this place doesn't have better reviews? The service is always great, we love their food (sushi and cooked food), prices are fair. For some reason this place is unfairly overshadowed by other sushi restaurants in town, but I kind of like it being my hidden spot. ;)

This restaurant has a very nice atmosphere and good service. However, I feel the sushi was nothing to write home about. It was expensive but seemed only a notch up from sushi you can get from the grocery store deli. Having Widmer Hefeweizen on tap is definitely a plus though.

I loved the tempura fried seaweed on the sushi. My husband thought the General Tsos Chicken was some of the best he ever had (it was awesome). I would go back, it seemed to be privately owned and the people working there cared.

Stars: 3.5 2 for the food 1.5 for the cleanliness and decor Atmosphere: Very clean. No food on the floor, unlike most places that have booths. Everything seemed immaculate. Decor: Crisp. The decor had clean lines and classic colors. Dark bamboo booths were interesting and the chandelier was an interesting touch. Menu: Too many choices. I usually try to stay away from places that have a huge menu. More times than not, the food is mediocre due to the fact that they have to "specialize" in too many things and end-up being inconsistent, bland and lackluster. Food: Edamame appetizer was exactly what was expected; soybeans with sea salt, yum. I ordered the Tangerine Beef, which was okay, but the sauce seemed too heavy for the dish. The tangerine flavor could've been more apparent and it seemed way overcooked. I wouldn't order this again. My one companion wanted a box, but apparently they don't do those on the weekend. Why not? They don't seem complicated. Instead he ordered the Korean BBQ Beef Short Rib, which smelled delightful, but he complained that they were tough and that he would most likely not get them again either. Why I would go again..... If I was starving and the restaurant across the street was closed.

Amazing! Definitely had some of the best sushi in town. Tried probably 10 or 11 types and all were fresh and delicious. Waters were filled often and service was very friendly! Atmosphere is amazing as well. They must have changed the menus because there were no crossed out items or prices like the other reviews said. Definitely going back!

I love this place now! I used to not like it, but as of OCTOBER 2013 I'd say they have MASSIVELY improved. I feel like they changed chefs? they've updated their menu for sure and they had a manager walking around making sure everything was taken care of for their guests. My mom and I had potstickers for an appetizer which were top notch. I ALWAYS order gyoza/potstickers EVERYWHERE I go and these were second best (next to Sushi i in Spokane ((south hill)) I think they were hand made that day. I feel like their chef loves his job. I had the blackened salmon with soba noodles ($17) and my mom had two rolls.. a surf and turf and I don't remember which other one she had but she said she loved them. So if you've had a bad experience before October 2013 at Ugly Fish, shut your trap and give them another try. They are amazing now.

By far the best sushi in CDA! After moving to the area last year, we tried several places in town and were not impressed. Needless to say, we were thrilled to find this little gem.

Worst sushi in cda! The chefs will not adjust to your order if you ask, apparently it's in their culture to not. As our waitress told us "they're very prideful people". She even seemed irritated. Newsflash you're in America, you adapt to our customs. Don't like it, leave. Surprised this place is still in business.

Came here for a dinner pit stop on our road trip. Pros: -Sushi was dynamite. -Trendy decor. -We got our water right away. Cons: -Incredibly slow service. It took 40 minutes to get our soup and appetizer. -Got my order wrong. -Chinese food was bland and was barely a step up from Panda Express. -Staff was not working as a team and consequently severely affected the experience of all patrons (I.e. not helping each other clear dishes, fill water, etc). Overall: Ugly Fish Asian Bistro has potential, but they need to seriously focus on their service aspect if they intend to build the customer base that they want. As my boyfriend and I were eating our dinner, we heard two other tables complain about the "terrible service." Go in for the Japanese food and sushi, everything else is mediocre. This place would seem to be more successful on capitalizing on their expertise of Japanese food and building an exotic sake bar with it.

Truly fantastic, I just went there with my family and we ate so many dishes. Their sushi was extremely tasty and came in good quantities for the price. The spice indication level was roughly on the spot, but once you are up there then you feel the burn. The tangerine chicken was amazingly savory and has a pretty good kick. Their appetizers were delightful and we're a great way to start the meal; however for the price it seemed a little too small for its corresponding price. Their bento boxes were comprised of the usual rice, salad, teriyaki chicken, edamami, and tempura. Needless to say, it was fantastic all around and I would highly recommend this place to anyone and everyone interested in sushi or Japanese bistro.

I went there for lunch today & ordered the sashimi & sushi lunch special which came with rice and miso soup. Also had hot green tea to drink. The food was served promptly, the customer service was well above par and the ambiance and decor was very nice. Worthwhile to stop by & give it a try!

First experience was terrible. Sat at the sushi bar and we must have been invisible, took forever to get acknowledge by a server. After we finally got our sushi it was definitely not worth the wait. This was shortly after it first opened. As I do with everything I figured we'd give it a second try. So walked in only to be told it will be 50-55 minute wait for a table ( at least 3-4 open 4 tops) so asked if we could just sit at the sushi bar since there were still a few open chairs......NOPE! The response was enough for me: "I'm not sure, they might be too overwhelmed!" Will never try this place again, nice work! You have at least one thing right and that is the UGLY in your name. 1 star cause I have to.

Our server was so awkward! She spilled water all over our table and the floor and forgot my second roll. She had no idea that sushi was Japanese and referred to it as Chinese and then had no idea what mochi ice cream is. What is she doing there? Their menu was almost all discontinued with markings over prices to make them higher... Tacky. The place looked cool and I enjoyed my Godzilla roll but I won't return or recommend the place. Not to mention it was slow and the other waitresses just talked about wanting it to rain so they didn't feel so bad about being stuck there. Classy.

Overall we enjoyed the experience at Ugly Fish. The service was a little slow, and it was remarkable how many items on the fancy looking menu were blocked out as being "Discontinued". I had the Sake taster which was only three shots of sake. I didn't mind the amounts that were poured in each glass, but thought there should have been a description of what the sake was and how it should taste, as well as at least one other taster for the price. The food was good. The sushi rolls, sashimi, and bento box we got were all very well arranged, fresh, and flavorful. The ambiance was reminiscent of an upscale sushi place in some of the large cities we have lived in, and the waitstaff was friendly if not entirely prompt.

Overall. I loved the food. I over ordered on purpose and ate the rest the next day for lunch. The service was great and the atmosphere was nice. I did not order any sushi (my husband hates it) so i can't comment on their sushi just yet.

Went for my birthday back in December, was not very impressed! Sushi was fresh but okay at best. The menu offered many choices but many were discontinued or crossed out! Good to try once but Coeur D Alene has many other sushi/Asian places that are much better. Wouldn't recommend!

I'm confused, I truly am. I've eaten at Ding How (4.5 Stars), Ginger (4 Stars) and their semi-sister Wasabi (5 Stars) in North Spokane, while those places all have similarities you will generally very good to excellent sushi and pretty decent asian plates. However this place, which is part of their 'chain' has some serious problems. First of all the interior is very nice, I love the seats, the menu is huge with lots of colorful pictures that makes it look very enticing, but what you receive at the table is nothing like the picture. For example, the two sushi rolls we had looked like they had been made by a 5 year old. They were sloppily put together and basically ugly to look at, honestly the pre-made sushi in your local market looks better than what we were served. The flavor of the rolls was also off, one that was supposed to be spicy was lacking any discernible spice, the sushi rice itself was too sweet and deficient in rice vinegar, very disappointing. The Miso soup was terrible, way too much miso was mixed into the dashi making it unpalatable. We also ordered some of the dishes off of the menu and they turned out to be a poor representation of mall Chinese food, loaded with fat, and a gooey sugary sauces. The owners need to pay attention to this unit since it is seriously in need of help and doesn't match their other locals in quality. If this was my first visit I would have written off their other units as being insipid sushi joints with bastardized Chinese food. But luckily I ate at this faux Chinese place (NOTE: There was not one Asian customer in the place, unlike their other units where you see Asians all the time) last and know they can do a better job. Unless they get some serious Sushi Chef's and use the receipes they use in their other units there is no real reason to go this place. If you want good Sushi in CDA I suggest Syringa, if you are looking for Asian/Chinese style food there really is not any place that is good in the CDA or Spokane. However I would suggest Chan Bistro or Gordy's in Spokane and try out this companies other unit Ding How in liberty lake, honestly it would be worth the drive.

Way to many choices on on the menu, however, many were "discontinued". Sashimi salad was without the avocado it promised and the fish seemed to be leftovers. Rolls were OK and the yellow tail sushi was a major disappointment. Save your money, go to Syringa :) Service was fast.

Ugly Fish re-opened after being closed for some time, don't know the particulars of that. Upon our return we were greeted with a new menu. The menu has been trimmed down significantly and is now free of crossed out and eliminated dishes and the spelling and grammar of the menu is correct! However, dishes that we enjoyed before have been eliminated and prices have increased greatly. The prices are now in line with Bonzai Bistro but with out the view and downtown walk afterward. The staff here is VERY friendly and accustomed to proper service standards. We enjoyed our meals as much as two previous experiences, only now it was $10 more expensive on the check for 2 dinners. We might return.

welcoming and artsy entrance. Staff seemed stuck up, but that was a lesson in not judging a book by its cover. Comfortable and stylish, beautiful velvet chairs and booths. Great menu, gluten free options available. Food was fresh and delicious. Our server went into the back to find a special soy sauce i asked for, so accommodating! Try the surf and turf sushi roll (lobster, avacado topped with kobe beef)! Great place!!!

Well located and 2011 new sushi restaurant in Riverstone mall complex. Great location, easy parking, and modern decor meets Northern Idaho--and I'm not sure how I feel about the vibe here. How do I explain it? It's kind of like swanky hip-dark lit sushi bar coupled with a somewhat awkward frozen food section of your local national branded grocery store. The bar area, for example, seems like it was slapped together and glued onto the restaurant design at the last minute because someone forgot to include it in the original plan. The main dining room is also bisected by a row of booths that go floor to ceiling, which literally cuts the restaurant in two---I found this virtually eliminated any 'vibe' that the place could have otherwise had shared with its diners, and rather, hid many of us away (ourselves included) on the other side of the room out of site and out of earshot of our servers and most other diners. The menu (literally, I physical mean the menu you hold in your hand) is a staggering waste of paper and my time. The menu likely runs 20 pages, is bulkly, laminated and heavy and not in any way intuitive. I am a sushi lover and have eaten at 100's of eateries across our fine nation. This menu rivals the size of ones seen at national chains like The Cheescake Factory --and I at least believe that a menu this large is not a good thing. We're in N. Idaho! Make it simple! In the end it's just fish! Food was decent. Service was new (you can still tell some are in training) but all were trying their best to make you feel at home. If the decor, bar and menu issues could somehow all blend better I would give higher marks, but I have enough confusion in my life and I certainly don't need more by going to a sushi restaurant.

Been there 2x. Sushi was great both times. Biggest fresh pieces in town. At this point, its safe for me to say sushi was a bit better than Syringa and Bonsai. Not sure about the folks who gave it one star, but no significant issues that I saw. Certainly not with the food. Perhaps a couple of service kinks to work out but not enough to ding it a star. Also tried the Kung Pao chicken and it, too was great. very fresh. great beer selection as well.

Slow slow slow. Terrible waitress, sushi was okay, but not super fresh. They forgot one of our parties entire entree and we thought it would come later because it was a steak (not the one pictured in menu, apparently they don't offer that anymore) and when asked about it she just said "sorry, I forgot to put it in" and didn't offer any discount or anything. She said she would put it in but we were already finishing. She did warn us sushi was a bit behind, but she brought out one roll at a time, and it took over two hours. You do not get what you pay for at this place, I recommend somewhere else. Save your money and go to a place that appreciates your business.

Not too bad. Decor was trendy unique with red and black (kind of reminds me of a Tom Petty video), and the service for the lunch crowd seemed much better compared to earlier accounts of when it opened. Menu is varied from sushi, sashimi, and has all the variety of sushi and bento an dinner all in a picturesque menu book. The food was good (cucumber roll, dragon roll, sunset roll), but need to try again for a more in depth feel. So far so good....

One of the best Asian restaurants I've visited. The menu alone is worth the trip with its almost coffee table book glossy pictures. I agree with another Yelper that the menu is huge and is a hodge podge of all things Asian food. The decor is sort of funky - black table cloths instead of white, dark red, art-type industrial looking lighting. They have booths and separate tables. Hostess was friendly - but the person who was replenishing our water -not so much. But our waitress was great! She knew the menu well and had tried the dishes herself, so that makes a big difference when you're asking for recommendations. She steered us right by keeping it simple. I don't know if they are trying to get all the Asian type food in one place , but that's what it seems like. The menu has Chinese, Vietnamese, and Japanese food offerings. We thought it would be weird to mix sushi with garlic beef, for example. We kept it simple. Garlic beef, steamed rice, and green beans. I ordered sake, which was decent. Overall - the Chinese food side of it was okay. We worried a little bit about the freshness of sushi (since Couer d'Alene is in the Inland Northwest). Overall, we will probably try another place in the area, but if in the mood for some Chinese food or Vietnamese food, we might give it another shot. Great location right off the freeway and easy parking. Although I must say BarDeNay across the street was hopping. We will probably try that next time.

Stopped in for a little afternoon snack. Ordered a sushi roll and an appetizer. Sushi was the crispy spicy tuba roll and I thought it was tasty. My gf thought it wasn't spicy enough but I thought it was fine. The crab mirugau wasn't very good though. Tasted like an egg roll stuffed with oyster mushrooms with absolutely no crab taste.

Nothing to be impressed about, trust me. Its just like every other chinese american restaurant in the general area. We had an assortment of items from General Tso chicken, bbq pork chow mein, moo goo gai pan. I would say the general tso is comparable to Panda Express. Also the whole time that we were there the waitress came at the very end of our meal and asked if we wanted a to go box. I wasnt impressed or awed by any means.

First of all, I have to say that I agree with many of the points that other reviewers have made. I don't really see why it's necessary for this restaurant to be Pan-Asian - I'd rather see them focusing on producing one type of food (say Chinese OR Japanese) really well. And clearly having such a large menu has caused problems for the restaurant because in recent months they've discontinued about half their menu items (which, considering they have such a large seafood selection, is a HUGE relief). But while the food is not up to the standards of the kind of Asian food you can get in a big city (and believe me, my mom is Chinese so I grew up eating in the Chinatowns of London, New York and L.A. - I know from big city Asian food), it is some of the most authentic and tasty Chinese food I've had since moving to Idaho. The proof is in this fact - it is the ONLY Asian restaurant I've EVER been to in Idaho where my mom and I aren't the only Asian people in the restaurant (apart, occasionally, from servers). One time I came here and literally every other table in the restaurant had an Asian diner. So if you want to know where Asian people in Coeur D'Alene eat... it's Ugly Fish. As with almost every restaurant I've been to since moving to Coeur D'Alene, I'd say I probably wouldn't eat at this restaurant if it was located in L.A. but it's definitely the best local option for this kind of food. It IS pricey, though. Be ready to spend $20-30 per person, making it the upper end of local restaurant pricing. (Beverly's is about the same for lunch and has a much more "special" dining experience.)

The ambiance was quite nice and the service and wine were good. That's where it ended. We were really looking forward to good asian cuisine in a nice restaurant - but the nice restaurant is all we recieved. The calamari appetizer consisted of large, flavorless pieces with a lemony sauce that was touted as :spicy jalepeno". The toilet water at the nearest Mexican restaurant is most likely more flavorful and spicy. As an alternative, they brought us spicy mayo dip - again, not spicy, quite sweet and otherwise tasteless. Onto dinner.... ordered Tangerine Beef and Black Pepper Beef. The tangerine beef was horrible and it was vastly superior to the black pepper beef. The tangerine flavor wasn't bad but the aftertaste lingered for hours. It became overpowering and could no longer be eaten. The Black Pepper Beef consisted of bad stew meat - it couldn't be chewed as it was too gristly and tough. It had less flavor than the calamari. There was no black pepper whatsoever in the dish. All in all, $60+ for an appetizer, bottle of wine and two entrees isn't a bad price, unless you leave 3/4 of the food on the plate. Thank you Coldstone Creamery for a nice dinner after Ugly Fish.

This restaurant has a very nice atmosphere and good service. However, I feel the sushi was nothing to write home about. It was expensive but seemed only a notch up from sushi you can get from the grocery store deli. Having Widmer Hefeweizen on tap is definitely a plus though.

I ate at the Ugly Fish last week, great food. I've had faster servers but it was still acceptable.

Great food. The Lobster Roll was delicious and a meal in itself. Sushi platter was also very good. The salad was fresh and the dressing was great. Friendly staff too. We had a fun time.

Pork dry, chicken chewy and fatty, sushi was ok. We ordered tempura banana and apple for dessert, bad mistake. Nice atmosphere and service.

The food at this restaurant is excellent. The service was attentive and our water glass kept full. Try the mongolian beef and the California rolls, very good. Definitely the best new asian restaurant in Coeur d' Alene. This place goes to the top of our list of restaurants in the area.
